Book Tip

Book designers generally use Adobe InDesign software for page layout. Manuscripts (typically in word processing files) will not transfer identically page for page, so if you plan to have an index in your book it needs to be created after the designer has formatted the interior pages. Do not create an index with the page numbers in your word processing file because you'll be wasting your time. For more on indexing, click here.

Tidbit

According to preliminary statistics, the number of new and revised titles produced by traditional production methods in the U.S. fell 3% in 2008, to 275,232, but the number of on-demand and short-run titles soared 132%, to 285,394. The latter segment is the method typically used by self-publishers. The number of on-demand titles topped traditionally published books for the first time.
